2002 George Holbert Tucker Contest

The 2002 George Holbert Tucker Historical Essay Contest

Contest Deadline Has Passed! Winners Were Announced Nov. 6

First Prize $500 | Second Prize $300 | Third Prize $200

The Contest: If you could go back in time and interview an important figure in the history of Hampton Roads and Norfolk, which person would you interview? What questions would you ask?

In Your Essay: Participants should select an actual historical figure, such as Captain John Smith, not an imaginary person. The person should no longer be living. The essay should:

  1. Identify the person you would like to interview;
  2. Explain the role that person played in the history of Hampton Roads and Norfolk; and
  3. Outline the questions you would like to ask if you had the opportunity.

Eligibility: The contest is open to all Hampton Roads high school students (grades 9 - 12), including students who live in or attend school in: Chesapeake, Gloucester County, Hampton, Isle of Wight County, James City County, Mathews County, Newport News, Norfolk, Suffolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, and York County.

Ineligible: Children or grandchildren of Norfolk Historical Society board members are not eligible to participate.

Judging: The contest will be judged by a committee of local college professors and historians. The judges will not know the identity of the essay authors until after the winning essays are selected. Essays will be judged on their historical insights, as well as the creativity and quality of the writing.
