What questions would you ask? In Your Essay: Participants should select an actual historical figure, such as Captain John Smith, not an imaginary person. The person should no longer be living. The essay should:
Eligibility: The contest is open to all Hampton Roads high school students (grades 9 - 12), including students who live in or attend school in: Chesapeake, Gloucester County, Hampton, Isle of Wight County, James City County, Mathews County, Newport News, Norfolk, Suffolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, and York County. Ineligible: Children or grandchildren of Norfolk Historical Society board members are not eligible to participate. Judging: The contest will be judged by a committee of local college professors and historians. The judges will not know the identity of the essay authors until after the winning essays are selected. Essays will be judged on their historical insights, as well as the creativity and quality of the writing. Essay Length: 500 Words Minimum -- 1,500 Words Maximum. Checklist for Entries:
