George Tucker

George Holbert Tucker, the contest's namesake, provides a good starting point with his book Norfolk Highlights, particularly his chapters on:

• Maximilian Calvert, Norfolk Mayor
• Paul Loyall, Norfolk Mayor
• John Hunter Holt, Norfolk patriot who was publisher of the Virginia Gazette
• The Rev. Robert Williams, Norfolk's first Methodist preacher.
• James E. Fuller, former slave responsible for the Civil War monument.
• Moses Myers, Norfolk's first Jewish citizen.

Two books, widely available at area libraries, offer extensive background information:

Norfolk: The First Four Centuries

Published in 1994, this outstanding reference by Thomas C. Parramore, professor emeritus at Meredith College, with Peter C. Stewart, former profressor of history at Old Dominion University, and Tommy L. Bogger, professor and university archivist at Norfolk State University, is readily available in local bookstores and libraries.

Norfolk: Historic Southern Port

First published in 1931, author Thomas J. Wertenbaker of Princeton University was working on a second edition before ill health forced him to abandon the task. The second edition was completed at Professor Wertenbaker's request by Marvin W. Schlegel of Longwood College, and published in 1962. No longer in print, this book can frequently be found in used book stores, as well as the public libraries.
