Artifact ID Day with the Nansemond Chapter of
the Virginia Archeological Society

Do you have an unusual artifact or fossil that you
cannot figure out what it is? Bring that item to the Francis Land House
and members of the Nansemond Chapter of the Virginia Archeological
Society will discuss with you that curious item that you want identified.
Bill Gillenwaters will also be demonstrating the ancient art of flint
knapping.
No monetary values will be given during this program.
Free admission to program. Fee for house
tours.
Norfolk History Museum Program
Series “Prelude to Freedom: The Contraband
Slave Story”
October 10, 7:00 pm
Composer Gerri Hollins will present selections from her original folk
opera, first performed at Thomas Nelson Community College in 2005.
The opera is based on the thousands of slaves who sought and found
freedom at Fort Monroe, before the Emancipation
Proclamation. Ms. Hollins will perform several of the various roles,
accompanied by piano. Location: Kaufman Theatre, Chrysler Museum. Free
and open to the public. Light refreshments.

Norfolk History Museum Program
Series: “An Audience With His Excellency, George Washington”
November 14, 7:00 pm
He was a farmer, a soldier and a president. Spend an evening with the man known
as The Father of His Country as Virginia Patriots interpreter Kevin Grantz brings
George Washington to life. What was America’s First President’s connection
to Norfolk? Did he really sleep here? Learn what it was like to help shape the
destiny of this fledgling country as one of its Founding Fathers.
Location: Kaufman
Theatre, Chrysler Museum. Free and open to the public. Light refreshments.
Virginia Beach Genealogical Society
The Virginia
Beach Genealogical Society meets on the second Thursday of each month
between September and May at the Virginia Beach Central Library, 4100
Virginia Beach Blvd., starting at 7:00 pm and ending no later than
9:00 pm.
The society also has smaller Special Interest Groups offering classes
and/or discussion forums on a variety of topics including beginning
techniques for those getting started in genealogy, Internet and computer
research techniques, and writing and publishing genealogical research.
One VBGS group, meeting at the Pungo-Blackwater Public Library, focuses
on residents of Lower Princess Ann County. For full information on the

Norfolk Southern Corporation Museum Opens
The Norfolk Southern Corporation marked its 175th anniversary on December
3rd by unveiling a 1,600-square-foot museum with exhibits and artifacts
that highlight the company's history. The exhibits include sections
of Civil War-era tracks, vintage tools and a locomotive simulator.
The museum is located on the first floor of the Norfolk Southern Corporation
headquarters building at 3 Commercial Place, downtown Norfolk. Free.
