In writing this book I have consulted the original sources as far as
possible for my facts. These are the records of Lower Norfolk County
now preserved in the Circuit Court of the City of Chesapeake; the Norfolk
Council Orders for 1736-1798; and the wills, deeds, and marriage bonds
and other records of the Corporation Court of the City of Norfolk.
I have also used extensively the microfilm files of the late Eighteenth
and early Nineteenth Century Norfolk newspapers as well as those of
the Virginia Gazette on file in the Sargeant Memorial Room of Kirn Memorial
Library.
Other collective printed sources used by me from the same collection
were the bound volumes of the Lower Norfolk County Antiquary, Virginia
Magazine of History and Biography, Wiliam and Mary College Quarterly,
and Virginia Historical Register, as well as early Norfolk borough and
city directories dating from 1801 through 1881.
