The Norfolk Historical Society interprets and preserves the history of Norfolk, a Virginia seaport city chartered in 1682.

The Society collects, preserves, and makes available to the public objects and records relating to Norfolk's history. Selected artifacts and essays are available online, as well as the complete text of George Holbert Tucker's book Norfolk Highlights 1584 - 1881, originally commissioned and published by the society in 1972. For what's new, see the Courier, the society's newsletter.

In recent years, one of the society's major projects has been restoring Fort Norfolk, the last remaining of 19 harbor-front forts authorized in 1794 by President George Washington. Visitors to norfolkhistorical.org may take a virtual tour of the fort.

The Norfolk Historical Society's educational and preservation programs are made possible by the support of members and other donors. Members of the Society receive free or discounted admission to a variety of historical lectures and events, and a subscription to the Courier.
